FREEHOLD, NJ - - Holiday
Credit won for the third time in three starts this year to take the 2008 Dexter
Cup Final. Guided by Ron Pierce, the
Jimmy Takter trained colt was never challenged and finished in 1:56.3 to take
the first race on the road to the Hambletonian.
Holiday Credit paid $ 2.80, 2.40, 2.10.
Finishing second was First
Pleasurelane ($ 6.00, 3.20) with David Miller, while Andy Miller guided Oh So
White ($2.10) to third.
The top three finishers all had won
their eliminations for the Dexter the previous week.
The race marked the 49th edition of the Dexter which first started
out at Roosevelt Raceway in 1960 as a one and 1/16 mile race until 1965 when the
distance was shortened to the mile race it is today. With the closing of
Roosevelt
in 1987, the Dexter moved to Yonkers Raceway until 1992 when it moved to its
current home of Freehold Raceway.
The race is named after Dexter, the world champion trotter who was sired by
Hambletonian. Dexter started off his
career at age 6 and proceeded to reel off a record 46 victories in 50 starts.
His career spanned only three years from 1864 to 1867.
