MANFINITY TAKES $162,500
DEXTER CUP FINAL AT FREEHOLD
FREEHOLD, NJ - - Manfinity led
wire to wire to take the Dexter Cup Final at Freehold Saturday.
Driven by George Brennan, the Larry Rathbone trained colt finished in
1:58.2 and paid $ 4.60, 4.80, 3.40.
Finishing second was Rovaneimi ($
8.60, 5.00) driven by Steve Smith. Both
Manfinity and Rovaneimi are Hambletonian eligible.
Sullivan’s Travels with David
Miller was second for much of the race but was passed in the stretch and
finished third ($ 3.40).
Driven and trained by Todd
Smedshammer, Cumulus finished fourth.
Manfinity was helped by New Hampshire
Boy (Jeff Gregory) and the Budget Gap (Rod Allen) both going on a break on the
first turn. Light Headed (Todd
Schadel driven and trained) finished sixth. New Hampshire Boy ended up fifth,
while Budget Gap finished eighth. Bamboo
Yankee with Ray Schnittker finished seventh.
The race marked the 48th edition of the Dexter which first started
out at Roosevelt Raceway in 1960 as a one and 1/16 mile race until 1965 when the
distance was shortened to the mile race it is today. With the closing of
Roosevelt in 1987, the Dexter moved to Yonkers Raceway until 1992 when it moved
to its current home of Freehold Raceway.
The race is named after Dexter, the world champion trotter who was sired by
Hambletonian. Dexter started off
his career at age 6 and proceeded to reel off a record 46 victories in 50
starts. His career spanned only
three years from 1864 to 1867.
