MANFINITY TAKES $162,500 DEXTER CUP FINAL AT FREEHOLD

FREEHOLD, NJ - - Manfinity led wire to wire to take the Dexter Cup Final at Freehold Saturday.   Driven by George Brennan, the Larry Rathbone trained colt finished in 1:58.2 and paid $ 4.60, 4.80, 3.40.

Finishing second was Rovaneimi ($ 8.60, 5.00) driven by Steve Smith.  Both Manfinity and Rovaneimi are Hambletonian eligible.

Sullivan’s Travels with David Miller was second for much of the race but was passed in the stretch and finished third ($ 3.40).

Driven and trained by Todd Smedshammer, Cumulus finished fourth.

Manfinity was helped by New Hampshire Boy (Jeff Gregory) and the Budget Gap (Rod Allen) both going on a break on the first turn.  Light Headed (Todd Schadel driven and trained) finished sixth. New Hampshire Boy ended up fifth, while Budget Gap finished eighth.  Bamboo Yankee with Ray Schnittker  finished seventh.

The race marked the 48th edition of the Dexter which first started out at Roosevelt Raceway in 1960 as a one and 1/16 mile race until 1965 when the distance was shortened to the mile race it is today. With the closing of Roosevelt in 1987, the Dexter moved to Yonkers Raceway until 1992 when it moved to its current home of Freehold Raceway.

The race is named after Dexter, the world champion trotter who was sired by Hambletonian.  Dexter started off his career at age 6 and proceeded to reel off a record 46 victories in 50 starts.  His career spanned only three years from 1864 to 1867.
