OFFICIAL TAKES $392,850 CANE PACE FINAL AT FREEHOLD
FREEHOLD, NJ - - Art Official took the lead by the quarter and never looked
back to win the 54th edition of the $ 392,850 Cane Pace at Freehold Raceway.
Guiding Art Official was Ron Pierce, taking the Cane for his second time
in three years and fourth
overall.
The win for Art Official marks the first time the Meadowlands Pace winner
also won the
Cane Pace since On The Road Again did it in 1984.
This also was the first Cane Pace win for trainer Joe Seekman whose colt
finished in 1:51.1, shy of the Freehold track
record set by Art Official in the elimination (1:50.4).
Finishing second was Badlands Nitro with Brian Sears.
The Battle of Brandywine winner got out to an early lead in the race
until Art Official passed him just prior to
the quarter pole. Badlands Nitro
made a run at the end but couldn’t overtake Art Official.
Finishing third was Moon Beam (Yannick Gingras), while McCedes (Daniel Dube)
was fourth.
The Cane Pace is the first race in pacing’s triple crown.
The other races being the Little Brown Jug (September 18) and Messenger
Stakes (October 25).
Art Official rewarded supporters with a payout of $ 3.20, 2.20, 2.10.
In the split $ 78,400 Shady Daisy, Andy Miller guided Happy Dreamer to the
win in one
division, while Cartniverous with Brian Sears took the second.
In the other major stakes race, Champ’s Folly with David Miller won the $
156,940 Battle of Freehold for two year olds.
Precious Medal (Andy Miller) was second while McIdle (Ron Pierce)
finished third.
